When two moderns walked into 1936

Lionel Messi drops into the 1936 Argentine XI. Cristiano Ronaldo drops into the 1936 Portuguese XI. Every match they play is run under the rules and conditions of the era. Below is what the qualifiers say, and how much each modern intruder actually changes it.

  • Adding Messi raises Argentina's expected goals per match by 0.32 across three qualifiers.
  • Adding Ronaldo closes the gap between Portugal and Czechoslovakia by roughly a third over the group.
  • Both teams make the round of 16, where the muddy pitches get worse and the laundry list of substitutions stays empty.

Both ratings adjusted for the era's heavy ball, missing substitutions, and brutal pitch surfaces. The deltas show what the conditions actually cost.

Era adjustment

Still the most decisive player in any group. The conditions shave off two visible attributes, but his playmaking weight covers for them.

  • Heavy lace-up boots and a leather ball sap acceleration between 30 and 70 metres.
  • Low centre of gravity is still his friend on uneven, muddy pitches. His usual first-step chaos loses about a metre of separation.
  • Free-kick technique travels back to 1936 untouched; the wall doesn't have the foam height it does now.
  • No substitutions: stamina is the limiter. The Argentine staff plan to ease him after the hour mark rather than risk a calf.

Era adjustment

Still Portugal's gravity. The ball style favours his shooting and aerial output; his dribbling is the line that suffers most in this simulation.

  • The stepovers lose their snap on a half-frozen, rutted pitch. Straight-line dribbling survives better than his repertoire.
  • Aerial reach is still elite; the ball feels heavier on the head but he's strong enough to direct it.
  • Stamina profile remains elite. The kit and conditions still drag at minute 75. Portugal's midfield needs to protect him.
  • Free kick is treated as a genuine set-piece threat, not a circus; the 1936 ball responds well to his knuckleball dip.
